Advisor Checklist

To get started simply register your student teams at www.stockmarketgame.org . Students will research and invest in companies by entering stock, bonds and mutual fund purchases in their online account. The information below will hopefully give you ideas on how to expand the program. Most teachers start out with the basics and expand the SMG Program over time.

  • Go to www.economicstexas.org, click on the SMG icon and read information. Print important items.
  • Register student teams at www.stockmarketgame,org a login ID and password for each registered team will be sent to your email address beginning three weeks before the start of the session.
  • Shortly after you register your Advisor Login ID and Password will be emailed. Go to www.stockmarktetgame.org and log on to the Teacher Support Center.

Visit the Teacher Support Center

  • Click the links to Lesson, Projects, Publications, etc. to review valuable teaching resources
  • Check out the red section that contains links to a Teacher’s Guide, Understanding Portfolios, and Rules of the SMG
  • Documents can be saved or printed

– Develop an SMG bulletin board, administer a pre-test, and send a letter to parents and school principal explaining the purpose of the SMG. (optional)

– Divide class into teams of no more than 5 students and assign roles.

– Assign each team a login ID and password. Keep a record of assignments.

– Review the online trading account using a computer demonstration screen or in a computer lab. The PowerPoint presentation in the Understanding Portfolio Pages in the Teacher Support Center can be helpful. Explain how to log on and enter a trade.

Review the following before the SMG begins:

  • Basics of investing
  • Rules of the SMG
  • How to choose stocks for the SMG
  • How to use the newspaper throughout the SMG
  • How to read portfolio pages
  • How to calculate transactions
  • How to build a team portfolio
  • Importance of record keeping
  • How to apply regular class content into SMG

Consider discussing the following topics throughout the SMG:

  • The cost and benefits of different  types of investments.
  • The importance of long term investing and diversification.
  • What is a corporation, stock, stock market, the Dow?
  • How is a stock traded?
  • What causes the price of investments to change?
  • How do you read stock tables?
  • How to select stocks: research and analysis.
  • How do current events affect the stock market
  • How to chart stock prices
  • Explanation of margin accounts
  • Explanation of short sell/short cover transactions
  • How to check team rankings
